St. Pete On The Rise: Preservation vs. Development
A conversation on progress and preservation in St. Petersburg

-----

St. Petersburg is rising - literally. The ONE tower, completed in 2018, is now the tallest building in downtown St. Petersburg, and growth shows no signs of stopping.

As St. Pete develops, so too does the conversation surrounding the importance of historic preservation and protecting the elements that made St. Petersburg special in the first place.

Two recent decisions by City Council have brought the conversation to a fever pitch. The Council recently approved a controversial 21-story apartment tower near the historic Mirror Lake Community Library, after three hours of public comment lamenting the disproportionate scale of the building to the rest of the neighborhood.

That approval came after Mayor Kriseman expressed concerns about driving away developers following the Council's second rejection of the Bezu/Blue Lotus tower proposal just a few months before.

How can St. Petersburg grow without losing its charm? What are appropriate sacrifices in the name of development? How can St. Pete encourage historic preservation without scaring away development? How do issues like affordable housing, gentrification and inclusive development fit into the conversation?

Our panel will address these questions and more on Thursday, March 21.
